Mexitreks was founded in Sayulita by Stephen Pomeroy in 2012. Starting as a small operation with just himself as the guide, a big idea and a van, Stephen has been able to share his love for the natural world with thousands of travellers each year. Now, with the help of his awesome local guide; Arturo and Stephen's wife; Natasha, Mexitreks has been able to grow steadily while still maintaining its company philosophy.
Mexitreks is committed to providing quality tours with the least amount of impact on the local environment. Mexitreks keeps its environmental foot print small in the community by running the business without a location, while also allowing Mexitreks to provide exceptional tours at a lower cost. Both Stephen and Arturo are trained naturalist guides who love to share their knowledge about the area to each group. In addition, the tours are limited to small numbers to ensure the least amount disturbance to the natural environment during the tour and to ensure each client has the best experience possible. Finally, we give back
to our amazing community! Stephen, Natasha and Arturo are active members of the community, as well as Mexitreks donates a portion of all tours to various environmental initiatives and community non-profits in Sayulita.
Mexitreks all began with an idea...
A native of California, Stephen discovered his love for the natural environment while studying environmental sciences and guiding for his university adventure company. From there, Stephen moved to Costa Rica where he studied eco-tourism at the University of Costa Rica and worked on conservation projects in the Osa Peninsula which assisted in the protection of local jaguar populations.
Stephen moved to Sayulita, Mexico in 2007 and fell in love with not just its surrounding natural beauty, but with the amazing community of people that makes Sayulita the special place that it is today. During his first four years in Sayulita, Stephen developed and taught the environmental education curriculum at a local primary school (CVIS). This allowed him to spend countless hours hiking through the back country while learning from the locals who have a vast knowledge of flora and fauna of the surrounding forests.
After leaving CVIS, Stephen sought out to explore his passion further and started up Mexitreks Adventure tours. And the rest is history!
Stephen has years of experience as a field guide in many different countries, climates, and terrains. He is Wilderness First Aid certified and bilingual in English and Spanish. Stephen also has a wide knowledge of the local flora and fauna and knowledge about the historical culture of the area and has passed all this information onto his lead guide Arturo. Together they are able to provide the best quality of tours in town!
